Description: The Division of Hepatology incorporates the General Liver, Liver Transplant and Porphyria Clinics; and dedicated inpatient services. It is the only Health Professions Council accredited Hepatology training unit in South Africa.
As a Tertiary and Quaternary Liver referral centre, we offer highly specialised services including expertise in the management of acute and chronic liver diseases, including the assessment and management of patients pre- and post-liver transplantation. Our clinical care and research cohorts include patients with chronic hepatitis B and C, HIV/HBV and HIV/HCV co-infections, hepatocellular carcinoma, HIV associated liver disease, drug-induced liver injuries, cholestatic liver diseases, alcohol-related liver disease, metabolic-dysfunction associated fatty liver disease and parasitic liver infections.
We run the Viral Hepatitis in Sub-Saharan Africa Project ECHO clinics as the expertise Hub with International 'spokes' in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, The Gambia and Zimbabwe.
