Our vision. Tackling hepatitis B as a public health threat in Africa.
We already have effective tools to prevent mother to child transmission of hepatitis B and prevent liver disease in adults with chronic hepatitis B. We have tests to diagnose infection, including point of care tests, vaccines that work to prevent infection, and we have antiviral therapy (tenofovir), that can stop and reverse liver damage, and can also reduce the risk of a mother transmitting hepatitis B to her children.
Our group aims to understand how best to use these tools, how to develop programmes that prevent infection and treat liver disease and to develop new tools that can tackle this serious public health threat.
We are working towards a world where hepatitis B is no longer a serious health threat in African countries.
